May Madness

Wow. What a month May has been for AI. If you thought AI was moving fast before, buckle up.

Hey everyone!

May was a bit of a crazy month for me. I’ve been doubling down on video and getting that workflow dialed so the newsletter took a back seat for a bit, but I got it all figured out and we’re back baby!

Wow. What a month May has been for AI. If you thought AI was moving fast before, buckle up. This month delivered the most jaw-dropping AI developments we've ever seen—from billion-dollar acquisitions to breakthrough scientific discoveries to stark warnings about mass unemployment. So much to get into so lets get you all caught up.

May’s Big Stories

  • Claude 4 Arrives

  • OpenAI's $6.5B Jony Ive Deal

  • Google I/O's $250/Month AI Tier

  • UAE Goes All-In: The World's First AI-First Nation

  • AI Makes Scientific Breakthroughs

  • Anthropic CEO's Warning

Let’s get into it. 🚀

🧠 Claude 4 Arrives

Claude Opus 4 is the world's best coding model, with sustained performance on complex, long-running tasks. But it’s so much more than that. I don’t code but I use it for just about everything else. Claude is my favorite AI model and I can’t recommend it enough. Try it today!

Key Details:

  • Claude Sonnet 4 achieves 72.7% on SWE-bench, the highest coding benchmark score ever recorded

  • Both models can use tools—like web search—during extended thinking

  • Training cut-off date is March 2025—the most recent of any major model

  • Extended thinking mode allows step-by-step reasoning visible to users

  • 65% less likely to use shortcuts or loopholes compared to previous models

Why It Matters

Cursor calls it "state-of-the-art for coding and a leap forward in complex codebase understanding." Early users report Claude 4 can work independently for 7+ hours on complex engineering tasks. This positions Anthropic as the go-to choice for developers and could fundamentally change how software gets built.

💰 OpenAI's $6.5B Jony Ive Deal

OpenAI will acquire the AI device startup co-founded by Apple Inc. veteran Jony Ive in a nearly $6.5 billion all-stock deal

Key Details:

  • OpenAI's largest acquisition ever brings the legendary iPhone designer into the AI hardware race

  • Ive's startup "io" has 55 engineers, scientists, and former Apple designers

  • First products expected to debut in 2026, described as moving consumers "beyond screens"

  • The deal makes Ive creative head at OpenAI with input into future ChatGPT versions

  • Ive told The New York Times he was disillusioned by the iPhone's impact on users' attention and anxiety

Why It Matters

The man who designed the iPhone is now building its AI-powered screenless successor. If Ive can work the same magic that made Apple's devices irresistible, OpenAI could own the next computing platform entirely.

🎯 Google I/O's $250/Month AI Tier

Google AI Ultra, a new AI subscription plan with the highest usage limits and access to the most capable models

Key Details:

  • Google AI Ultra costs $249.99/month—the most expensive consumer AI plan ever

  • Includes access to their INSANE video model Veo 3

  • Includes 30 TB of storage and access to YouTube Premium

  • Gemini 2.5 Pro sweeps LMArena leaderboard in all categories

Why It Matters

Google is betting that power users will pay premium prices for premium AI. After losing $150 billion in market value when Apple testified that AI caused search declines, Google is making an aggressive play to own the high-end AI market before competitors lock it up.

🇦🇪 UAE Goes All-In: The World's First AI-First Nation

The UAE will become the first country in the world to pay for ChatGPT Plus subscriptions for its entire population

Key Details:

  • The UAE government has announced that it will become the first country in the world to pay for ChatGPT Plus subscriptions for its entire population

  • 5GW AI campus in Abu Dhabi—the largest outside the U.S.

  • A 5GW capacity will enable it to serve half the global population, offering US cloud providers a vital regional hub

  • Stargate UAE project launched with OpenAI, Oracle, Nvidia, and Cisco

  • UAE aims to train 1 million AI talents by 2027

Why It Matters

By providing free access to advanced AI tools for every citizen, the UAE is conducting the world's largest experiment in AI democratization. This could become the model for how nations compete in the AI age.

Here’s my friend Giota breaking down Robin from FutureHouse!

🔬 AI Makes Scientific Breakthroughs: Robin and AlphaEvolve Change Everything

Robin achieves the first AI-generated scientific discovery, while AlphaEvolve breaks 50-year-old mathematical records.

Robin: The First AI Scientist

  • Robin is a workflow that orchestrates Crow, Falcon, and Finch to propose and pre-clinically validate novel treatments for any human disease

  • Discovered ripasudil as a novel treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration

  • The entire process—from conceptualizing Robin to paper submission—was completed in just 2.5 months by a small team of researchers

  • First AI system to autonomously discover and validate a novel therapeutic candidate

AlphaEvolve: Rewriting the Rules of Math

  • AlphaEvolve has come up with a way to perform a calculation, known as matrix multiplication, that in some cases is faster than the fastest-known method, which was developed by German mathematician Volker Strassen in 1969

  • "In roughly 75 percent of cases, it rediscovered state-of-the-art solutions, to the best of our knowledge," the researchers claim. "And in 20 percent of cases, AlphaEvolve improved the previously best known solutions"

  • Already saving Google 0.7% of worldwide compute resources—worth tens of millions annually

  • "I think AlphaEvolve is the first successful demonstration of new discoveries based on general-purpose LLMs"

Why It Matters

We're witnessing AI make genuine scientific discoveries for the first time. Robin discovered a potential new treatment for blindness. AlphaEvolve broke mathematical records that stood for half a century. These aren't just impressive demos—they're proof that AI can push the boundaries of human knowledge.

⚠️ Anthropic CEO's Warning: "Half of White-Collar Jobs Will Vanish"

AI could wipe out half of entry-level, white-collar jobs and spike unemployment to as much as 20% in the next one to five years

Key Details:

  • Dario Amodei told us in an interview from his San Francisco office that AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs — and spike unemployment to 10-20% in the next one to five years

  • Currently 60% of AI usage is for augmentation, 40% for automation—but automation is growing rapidly

  • The historical narrative about how tech advancement works is that technology would automate lower-paying, lower-skilled jobs, and the displaced human workers can be trained to take more lucrative positions

  • Amodei suggests lawmakers may need to consider levying a tax on AI companies

  • "We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming"

Why It Matters

Amodei is raising the alarm because he believes policymakers and the public aren't prepared for what's coming. The fact that he's willing to hurt his own industry's reputation shows how serious he thinks this threat is.

The Bottom Line

This month didn't just move the AI needle… it broke the scale. We've got the iPhone designer building AI hardware, a $6.5 billion bet on post-smartphone computing, warnings of mass unemployment from an industry insider, and AI systems making actual scientific breakthroughs.

The transformation isn't coming. It's here.

What we're seeing is the emergence of AI as the dominant force in technology, science, and society. The companies and countries that master AI will lead the next century. Those that don't risk being left behind entirely.

The AI revolution just went from 0 to 100. Hold on tight.

That’s it for May’s Upload! Going forward I’ll be doing a weekly AI wrap up on Fridays so stay tuned! Tomorrow’s AI breakthroughs will be even bigger.

See you then 👋
